Keynote Speaker: Mayor Earnie Porta, author of Occoquan, from the Images of America series will speak about preparing a book to be published, the publishing process and things to consider before you take the leap.
Earnie Porta has served as Mayor of the Town of Occoquan from July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2014 and from July 1, 2018 to the present. He holds a BS degree cum laude and a Certificate in Arab Studies from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and the Georgetown University Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, respectively, a JD from the Georgetown University Law Center, an MA in History from George Mason University, and a PhD in History from Georgetown University. Dr. Porta has spent most of his professional career in the field of Finance.
An active member of various civic organizations, Dr. Porta is or has served as treasurer for the Prince William Trails and Streams Coalition, the Occoquan Historical Society, the Prince William Public Library System Foundation, Historic Prince William, Patriots for Disabled Divers, and the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association. In addition, he serves as the Secretary of the Prince William Historic Preservation Foundation. He is also a graduate of Leadership Prince William (class of 2009). In November of 2010, he authored a book on Occoquan in Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series. His interests include astronomy, scuba diving, and stand-up paddleboarding, and he holds a 3rd degree black belt in the Korean martial art of Hapkido.
Guest Speaker: Attorney Milton C. Johns has been in private practice for over 17 years and has spent almost 30 years in government and defense contracting arenas in a variety of roles. Mr. Johns will give us an overview of copyright considerations. Mr. Johns is an adjunct professor of Business Law at Northern Virginia Community College, and a former adjunct professor of business law at Strayer University in Woodbridge, Virginia and of legal research and writing at George Mason University School of Law. Mr. Johns was awarded the Aeronautical Merit Cross, second class, by the government of Spain in 1995. He has been affiliated with Write by the Rails other writing groups for several years and is published in fiction and nonfiction.
Member Speaker: Jan Rayl, WbtR Vice President and Immediate Past President, is a writer and registered nurse with additional certification in infusion (intravenous therapy). She will present Get Out of Your Way to Get Published. Jan has over 40 years of nursing experience. She currently teaches nursing full-time and continues to see patients part-time. Jan has been published in numerous nursing journals and two anthologies, as well as on blogs. Her work includes her own blog with book reviews. She is currently working on a novel and several short stories as she continues to write poetry.
